Australian opener Travis Head is looking to leverage his experience in the ongoing IPL 2024 as a springboard for a successful T20 World Cup campaign in June. Currently representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Head is aiming to refine his skills and build form before the global showpiece held in the USA and West Indies.
While Head has yet to fully explode in the IPL this season, with 133 runs from four innings and a highest score of 62 against Mumbai Indians, his focus remains on long-term gains.
“I’ve come a long way as a player,” Head stated to Indian media. “Owning my style and playing overseas experience have helped me tick a few boxes.”
Head acknowledges the need for consistency: “Now the pressure is to keep performing. In all formats, I need to simplify things by focusing on my technique and blueprint.”
The upcoming World Cup is a key motivator for Head.
“With the World Cup around the corner, hopefully being in the squad and batting at the top, the IPL provides a great platform to get runs and form,” he expressed.
Mental fitness is also a priority for Head:
“Staying mentally fresh throughout the IPL and working on my game are crucial to be ready for the World Cup. However, I feel prepared now.”
Head is relishing his return to the IPL after a seven-year absence.
“Getting runs in the first game was nice, and honestly, I didn’t have many expectations. It’s been a long time, but I’m more mature now,” he reflected.
Head has a decent record in T20Is, amassing 656 runs from 25 innings at an average of 29.81, with a highest score of 91. While his IPL form is still building, his experience and determination suggest he’s using the tournament as a valuable stepping stone towards T20 World Cup glory.
