New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is likely to announce its squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 on 20th September. The marquee event is set to begin in October, as the Black Caps will kick start their World Cup journey with the Super 12 opener against the hosts, Australia.
According to the reports, one of their significant cricketers, Kyle Jamieson, might be ruled out of New Zealand’s T20 World Cup squad. The quick bowler is likely to be replaced by the pacer Adam Milne, anticipating the board’s call.
Milne was left out of the team’s squad during the Australia series due to the Achilles injury he sustained while playing against Ireland in July. However, it is understood that the player has made improvements and is likely to be available for squad selection. It must be noted that he will first have to clear the fitness test before being named to the crew.
If the reports revolving are accurate, he might be rested for the upcoming tri-series, including Pakistan and Bangladesh. He has featured in 31 T20Is soo far, gathering 32 wickets at an average of 26.68. Notably, Kyle was expelled after suffering a back injury while playing against England and has not been around the team since then.
According to another report from New Zealand, if Milne is not ready to participate in the event following his injury, Matt Henry might be considered as the backup seamer. Nevertheless, Henry’s inclusion depends if his side strain is not severe.
Since New Zealand did not enjoy a great stint versus Australia, losing by 3-0, they will utilize the tri-series to prepare for the all-important event, with their first match scheduled against the Kangaroos.
It is pertinent to mention here that the due date to announce the squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 was the 16th of September, but the ICC has granted an extension to the board upon request.
