Indian captain Rohit Sharma has expressed his desire to see a return of Test cricket between arch-rivals India and Pakistan. The two cricketing giants haven’t played a bilateral Test series since 2007, leaving a void for fans of both nations.
During a podcast appearance on Club Prairie Fire, former England skipper Michael Vaughan prompted Rohit about the potential for a regular India-Pakistan Test series. Rohit’s response was enthusiastic.
“I totally believe that!” he declared. “They are a good team with a superb bowling line-up. It would be a great contest, especially overseas.”
Rohit acknowledged the long hiatus, mentioning the 2007 series where Wasim Jaffer scored a double hundred in Kolkata.
Vaughan then pressed the issue, asking if Rohit would like to see a regular series with Pakistan. The Indian captain reiterated his support: “I would love to. At the end of the day, we want to be in a contest.”
For Rohit, the focus lies on pure cricketing competition. “It’s just pure cricket. A battle between bat and ball,” he emphasized.
While India and Pakistan regularly clash in ICC tournaments, a bilateral Test series has eluded fans for over 16 years. The upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 will see them face off on June 9th at Eisenhower Park in New York, but Rohit’s comments highlight a desire for a more extended Test battle.
With Rohit’s backing, the possibility of a renewed India-Pakistan Test series might gain traction. Whether political hurdles can be overcome remains to be seen, but the cricketing world would undoubtedly welcome a return to this historic rivalry on the Test stage.
