An International Championship, ICC Men’s t20 world cup is a tournament of the T20 format that the International Cricket Council organises. A total of 16 teams participate in this famous tournament, out of which ten are chosen from the team rankings and the rest selected after the T20 World cup qualifier stage.
After every two years, this tournament is conducted as per the ICC conducts rulings, but due to COVID-19 Pandemic, the 7th edition of the ICC T20 world cup, which was to be held in the year 2020, was postponed, which caused dejection for the cricket fans.
Here, we pay a look at the list of the winners of the International tournament organised by the International cricket council:
ICC Men’s T20 world cup winners:
1. India (2007)
The first ICC men’s T20 World Cup started on September 11, 2007, which South Africa hosted. Out of the 12 playing teams, Pakistan and India managed to sweep over into the tournament’s final match under the captaincy of Shoaib Malik and MS Dhoni, respectively.
The T20 world cup final was conducted on September 24 in Johannesburg, where India won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 157 runs with five wickets lost. In return, Pakistan lost, making 152 runs and gave up all their doors in hand to the Indians, granting them a five runs victory.
Thus the first team to win the T20 World Cup International tournament was the Indian cricket team, where India defeated Pakistan to win the cup. Irfan Pathan of India was the player of the match, taking three wickets from 16 runs, whereas Shahid Afridi from Pakistan became the player of the series.
2. Pakistan (2009)
In the next season of the ICC men’s t20 world cup, which England hosted, Pakistan was a runner-up in the previous and in this, they held the winning trophy cup up high. The Sri Lankan team was captained by Kumar Sangakkara.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first, making up 138 runs with six wickets lost in the first innings. In return, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets, efficiently achieving the target set by the first team despite losing the group stage against them.
Hence Pakistan won this game and made a place in the T20 world cup winners list among the seven tournaments played until now. Shahid Afridi was the player of the match, whereas Tillakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka was the player of the series, making 317 runs in total.
3. England (2010)
Another host nation West Indies which conducted the ICC cricket men’s t20 world cup between 30 April and 16 May 2010, won against the winner team of this year but eventually could not themselves makeover into the finals.
England, another team among the cricket world cup winners, was the first non-Asian team to win the ICC men’s t20 world cup tournament against the arch-rivals Australia. The final was conducted in Bridgetown on May 16, 2010, where the toss was won by England, who then elected to bowl first.
Australia set up a target of 148 for the English team, which they quickly managed to achieve with seven wickets and 18 balls still remaining with them. England’s Craig Kieswetter was the match player scoring 63 runs off 49 balls, and Kevin Pietersen was the player of the series who made 248 runs.

4. West Indies (2012)
The fourth edition of the ICC men’s t20 world cup was conducted between the 18th of September and till the 7th of October in 2012 on the grounds of Sri Lanka, which turned out to be the runner-ups this season.
West Indies and Sri Lanka, the two teams who, with their splendid performance throughout the tournament, reached into the finals and competed for the winning trophy. The teams were led by Daren Sammy and Mahela Jayawardene, respectively.
West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first in the innings setting up a target of 138 runs for the Sri Lankan team. In return, Sri Lanka lost all their wickets, scoring just 101 runs, and thus, West Indies won the match tournament final trophy by 36 runs.
Marlon Samuels of the West Indies cricket team was chosen as the man of the match who had scored 78 runs off 56 balls and also blown one wicket giving away just 15 runs. In the mentioned years, T20 world cup winners West Indies made their place showing their best performance in the final match.
5. Sri Lanka (2014)
Following two years after the previous Men’s t20 world cup, in the year 2014, the final match and in note the whole tournament was hosted by Bangladesh between the dates 16th of March and the 6th of April. Sri Lanka and India were the major teams who reached the finals.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field first, letting India just score an easily manageable 130 runs, which Sri Lanka made quickly with 13 balls still remaining and with six wickets in hand.
Hence, Sri Lanka won the 5th edition of the Men’s t20 world cup tournament, with Kumar Sangakkara being the player of the match, scoring a total of 52* runs in 35 balls. In contrast, Virat Kohli of the Indian cricket team was chosen as the player of the series as he scored 319 runs for the home team.
6. West Indies (2016)
The ICC men’s t20 world cup 2016 was the first edition which India hosted between the 8th of March and the 3rd of April. West Indies and England were the two groups who survived until the tournament’s final match. It was both England’s and West Indies’ 2nd time into the final stage.
The final match was conducted on the cricketing grounds of Kolkata, where West Indies won the toss and elected to field first. England scored a massive total on board of 155 runs with nine wickets lost. But with Marlon Samuels, the West Indies team were at ease.
The batting team, now with Marlon Samuels and Carlos Brathwaite, took their home nation to a massive four wickets victory with two balls remaining. West Indies beating England won their 2nd T20 world cup trophy and became the only team to win it twice.
7. Australia (2021)
As the ICC Men’s t20 world cup 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Australia did not get a chance to host this thrilling and most liked tournament among cricket lovers. Looking forward, Australia will most likely host the 2022 ICC Men’s t20 world cup.
Paying heed to the 2021 tournament, which was conducted both in UAE and Oman, starting on the 17th of October and ending on the 14th of November, the final match for the winning cup was played between Australia and New Zealand in Dubai international cricket stadium.
After winning the toss, Australia elected to field first, so New Zealand made 172 runs with just four wickets lost in the first innings. Following up in return, Australia showed excellent batting performance of Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell, who granted their team an eight wickets victory with seven balls to spare.
