Glenn Maxwell to play MLC after taking an indefinite break from IPL

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is all set to represent Washington Freedom in the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC). He took an indefinite break from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) where he was representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Maxwell, who could only score 32 runs from six innings in the IPL, felt a need to take a break to prioritize his well-being. The RCB hover at the bottom of the points table building pressure on key players like Maxwell to bring about a quick change.

Notably, the all-rounder will join his Australian teammates Steve Smith and Travis Head in the MLC, due to begin on July 4th. It is likely that Maxwell will mark his appearance in the IPL 2024 before joining his MLC franchise.

When asked if he would play RCB’s upcoming match against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday, he turned down citing discomfort in his hip. The Australian cricketer says he would like a few more days for recovery, however, he had earlier clarified that it is just a ‘temporary break’.

“I’ve got a little bit of a hip strain so I’ve got a few more days off and during recovery, So I’ve got a little period here where I’m still training, still trying to get myself right. If there is a spot that becomes available, I’ll put my hand up and take it,”

It should be noted that Freedom’s line-up includes four Australians including Ricky Ponting as the head coach. Maxwell is the third player to join after Travis was signed earlier this week. Smith signed the contract earlier this year. Opening up on excitement to play MLC 2024, Maxwell said,

“It’s a tournament that I watched from afar last year and was extremely excited about hopefully playing this tournament one day and luckily enough the timings have aligned this year. I’ve been speaking to Ricky Ponting and a few other players a fair bit over the last little period and certainly extremely excited to get stuck in,”
