The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Tuesday the appointment of Mushtaq Ahmed as their new spin bowling coach. This move brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to the Tigers’ bowling attack.
Mushtaq, a 53-year-old former Pakistan leg-spinner, boasts an illustrious career. He played a vital role in Pakistan’s triumphant 1992 World Cup campaign, famously dismissing England’s Graeme Hick with a well-disguised googly in the final. His bowling prowess translated into 185 wickets in 52 Tests and 161 wickets in 144 ODIs for Pakistan.
Beyond his playing days, Mushtaq has carved a niche for himself as a highly sought-after coach. He has honed the skills of spinners for renowned teams like England (2008-2014), West Indies (2018-2019), and Pakistan (2020-2022). He also served as Pakistan’s bowling consultant from 2014 to 2016.
Mushtaq expressed his enthusiasm about his new role, stating,
“It is a great honour for me to be a part of the Bangladesh cricket team.” He acknowledges the talent and potential of the Tigers, saying, “They are very coachable and I always believe that they are one of the most dangerous teams around.”
His aim is to instill confidence and unleash their full potential:
“They can beat anyone because they have the capability, the resources, and the talent. I will try to instill that belief into them. I am very excited at the opportunity to work with the team.”
Mushtaq’s appointment is a strategic move by the BCB, as they aim to sharpen their spin bowling attack in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA. His experience and coaching acumen will be invaluable in guiding the Tigers’ spinners and propelling them towards success on the world stage.
