Former India captain and Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni has shed light on the reason behind his iconic jersey number 7, revealing a delightful anecdote. Dhoni humorously explained that the number corresponds to the day his parents decided he would be born on Earth, making it an easy and meaningful choice for him.
The significance of the No. 7 jersey extends beyond mere superstition for Dhoni. It symbolizes his remarkable cricketing journey, marked by illustrious achievements on the field. Dhoni led India to two World Cup victories in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI), a feat that contributed to the retirement of the No. 7 jersey by the BCCI in December 2023.
Dhoni’s explanation on choosing jersey number 7
During a recent promotional event, Dhoni‘s quick wit and humor were on full display as he shared this charming explanation. Widely regarded as one of the finest white-ball cricketers in history, Dhoni’s legacy is built on his explosive batting and remarkable ability to finish matches under pressure.
“That is the time or day my parents decided I would come on earth. So, I was born on the 7th of July. So July again, the seventh month. 81 was the year so 8-1=7. So it was very easy for me to go out there when they asked me, ‘okay, what number do you want’,”
His illustrious career spans 350 ODIs for India, accumulating 10,773 runs at an impressive average of 50.57, alongside 90 Tests and 98 T20Is. Dhoni’s leadership prowess reached its pinnacle with India’s triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy in England, marking the team’s last ICC trophy victory under his captaincy.
As Dhoni gears up for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, he has been honing his skills in the nets, aiming to replicate Chennai Super Kings’ fifth title triumph in 2023 under his astute leadership.
