Reports suggest that the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee, Zaka Ashraf, is likely to receive an extension in his role that could potentially last until the conclusion of the ICC World Cup 2023. This development comes as the interim Prime Minister of Pakistan, Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, is expected to confirm the extension.
Zaka Ashraf assumed the position as Chairman of the PCB Management Committee in July 2023, taking over from the Najam Sethi-led team. The final decision regarding Ashraf’s committee, whether to extend their term or make changes, will be made after the culmination of the ICC World Cup in 2023. The caretaker Prime Minister is anticipated to decide on the proposed extension soon.
Zaka Ashraf’s regime to end on 4th November
It is crucial to note that Zaka Ashraf’s current four-month tenure is scheduled to end on November 4. However, his tenure is not without controversy, as he has been facing allegations of misconduct and unconstitutional decision-making from a member within his own management committee.
Zulfiqar Malik, a member of the management committee, has raised these allegations in an email directed to Zaka Ashraf and the management committee. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Malik has accused Ashraf and the administration of several transgressions, including failing to adhere to their legal and prescribed mandate, which was limited to managing the board’s daily affairs and not making long-term decisions.
Additionally, the allegations include ignoring directives from the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) ministry to hold board elections, failing to provide the requisite degree certificate for the position of PCB chairman, and allowing his son to involve himself informally in board matters. There are also claims of misusing the office of the PCB election commissioner for political purposes, which includes the alleged manipulation of elections in various regions.
The fate of Zaka Ashraf’s tenure and the future of PCB’s leadership will depend on the decision made by the interim Prime Minister following the conclusion of the ICC World Cup 2023.
