WWC 2022: Pakistan’s Sidra Ameen creates History

  • Sidra Ameen has become the first women cricketer to score a century for Pakistan in WWC
  • She scored 104 off 140 balls
  • Pakistan lost against Bangladesh by just 9 runs

Pakistan’s ace batter Sidra Ameen has created history for Pakistan by scoring her first ton in ICC Women World Cup (WWC) 2022, a feat achieved by no other Pakistani women batter. The ongoing ICC event isn’t going too great for women in green as they have lost four out of four matches.

Pakistan women face Bangladesh women in the former’s fourth encounter of the mega event. Batting first the Bangladesh women posted 234 runs courtesy of a 71 by Fargana Hoque and 46 by Nigar Sultana. Nashra Sandhu shined with the ball for Pakistan taking three wickets.

The girls in green had a dream start to their turn with the bat. But when Nahida and skipper Bismah lost their wickets on 43 and 31, all was left on Sidra’s shoulders as the middle and lower order completely collapsed. The right-hand batter put up a brave front to score a ton and bring her team to cross the finish line but unfortunately, she lost her wicket on 104 runs, the highest by any Pakistan female player in history. But luck was not in their favour as the opposition completely overpowered them and the green team lost by nine runs only.

It was a brilliant comeback by the 29-year-old as Ameen’s performance has been below par in the previous matches. Along with securing a ton, another record Bismah and her team achieved was securing the highest total in World Cup. Sadly the chances of team Pakistan making it to the semi-finals are extremely dim as they are yet to win a single match in the tournament. Against South Africa, the women in green came close to a win but lost by six runs.

Three matches are remaining for Pakistan in the tournament. The girls will play West Indies, England and New Zealand on 21st, 24th and 26th respectively.
