The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) faces the daunting task of hiring foreign coaches as no individual shows interest in being on board with them. Recently, the board has faced a couple of rejections as they made multiple offers to coaches across the world.
The board approached Australia’s Shane Watson offering a whopping annual salary of $2 Million. The latter was interested only in limited-over cricket coaching, however, declined the offer.
Moreover, Darren Sammy, who has had close ties with Pakistan since the inception of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), also turned down the coaching offer.
Most of these coaches are linked with the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) that began today, followed by other commitments. Hence, they are reluctant to accept part-time offers.
However, this is not the only reason why foreign coaches have turned down the PCB’s offers to coach the Pakistan Cricket team. As quoted by one of the PCB officials, the previous PCB management led by Zaka Ashraf expelled all the foreign coaches post-World Cup 2023.
The coaches including Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, and Andrew Puttick were sacked from their duties before the completion of their contracts. PCB’s behaviour in past for hiring and expelling foreign coaches is what makes them hesitant to accept coaching offers,
“It is because of the PCB’s poor track record in appointing and sacking coaches — foreign and local — in the past that others are now very reluctant to accept any offer from the PCB,” a board official acknowledged.
Notably, Sammy and Watson are not the only two coaches the PCB has approached. The list also includes Australia’s Justin Langer, New Zealand’s Mike Hesson, and England’s Eoin Morgan.
It is reported that the board has approached Matthew Hayden and Flower, while it has been heard that Flower has turned down the offer.
