- Shamilia Connell of the West Indies women cricket team collapsed in 47th over
- After primary treatment was given, she managed to get up and was taken to the hospital
- Nothing is yet said about the reasons underlying the incident
In the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 currently being staged in New Zealand, two teams Bangladesh and West Indies engaged in a crucial match. But the most shocking moment came when the West Indian player Shamilia Connell suddenly collapsed in the 47th over when the match was nearing a dramatic end.
Batting first after losing the toss, the women in maroon only managed to register 140 runs in the 50 overs courtesy of brilliant bowling spells from the Bangladesh women. But with the bat, the women in green could not take charge as they should have. Nonetheless, they came eerily close to the finish line when in the 47th over, just when the game was heating up, Shamilia Connell collapsed while she was guardian the midfield.
The play came to a sudden halt as her teammates and medical staff quickly came surrounding the 29-year-old. After brief preliminary treatment, the cricketer got up and managed to walk towards the ambulance herself. However, no report regarding this collapse has been said yet. The right-arm fast bowler had bowled only three overs in the match, giving away 15 overs only. At that point, the last wicket duo was trying to chase 19 runs in 13 balls and the match could go in any direction.
At the post-match ceremony, captain Stafanie Taylor had her say on the incident. “It was sad to see her go down. But we need to look at the bright side – it was time for us to regroup, we came back and changed the momentum.” Hayley Mathews who was named the player of the match also wished well of her teammate saying, “A bit worrying seeing her going down like that. She is a fighter, not sure what is wrong with her but hopefully, she is all right. She is a strong girl and we’re backing her to get well soon.”
The West Indies women went on to win the match when Taylor took the last wicket of Jahanara Alam in the final over to claim victory for her side.
