In the 150-year-old history of Test cricket, several cricketers from various Test-playing nations have reached the zenith. While some became famous due to their explosive batting knocks or record-making bowling spells, others registered unique records during their playing stints which are unbreakable up to date.
One such record is held by New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum. Known for the fastest Test century, the batter also holds the record for never missing a single Test match between debut and retirement (having reached 100th Test match). It makes him the only player with this record.
Apart from McCullum, India’s Kapil Dev, England’s Alastair Cook, and Australia’s Ian Healy missed one match each before reaching their 100th Test match.
McCullum, the wicket-keeping batter made his Test debut in 2004 vs South Africa at Hamilton and played his last Test against Australia in 2016.
On his debut, McCullum scored 57 and 19 in two innings whereas, during his last Test, he added a magnificent 145 in the first innings. While his debut Test was drawn, his last Test was won by Australia by seven wickets.
Overall, he is among the list of players with 100 or more Test appearances and has 6453 runs with a high score of 302 against India in 2014. It also makes him one of the 30 players to cross the 300+ run mark in a single Test inning.
McCullum’s record of never missing a test match between debut and retirement before reaching 100 Tests lasts longer.
Otherwise, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Hussey, Tony Greig, and John Reid marked 100% attendance in matches during their red-ball careers. However, they retired before reaching their 100th Test match.
