Former Pakistani bowler Umar Gul was appointed Afghanistan’s bowling coach in May 2022. After Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) was inspired by his coaching effect, they elongated the contract to one year, which started from Afg vs Zim series and will expire by the year’s end.
Gul’s current task with Afghanistan is the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 as the Mohammad Nabi-led men tackle Sri Lanka in the event’s opener on Saturday. His effective coaching can be seen in the way Afghanistan’s bowlers are bowling in the current encounter.
The early wickets of the Sri Lankan batters are credited to Gul’s coaching. Fazal ul Haq Farooqi trembled the entire top-order sending Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka back to the dugout on two runs and duck respectively. Naveen ul Haq picked the scalp of opener Pathum Nissanka who could manage three runs from an over and a ball.
