In the recent development of cricket, it has been reported that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to hire separate coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket. Under the chairmanship of Mohsin Naqvi, who recently was appointed unopposed, it has been decided to hire foreign coaches, along with the support of local coaches.
After the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, PCB management under Zaka Ashraf removed all foreign coaches including Mickey Arthur, Andrew Puttick, and Grant Bradburn. However, the new PCB management is willing to bring foreign coaches once again on board.
This time, one of the names under consideration is Shane Watson. However, the former Australian all-rounder will only be available for white-ball cricket. Watson, who has not coached an international side before, is only willing to be available for T20I and ODI encounters.
It makes it crystal clear that PCB will have to look for other options for Test cricket. As far as Watson’s salary is concerned, he will become the highest-paid coach in Pakistan’s history. The board is reportedly willing to pay him a whopping sum of $2 Million annually.
The reports further state that Watson is waiting for PCB to approach him officially and will sign the contract as soon as the offer is made. Watson’s first task, if hired, is to coach the team for a five-match T20I series against New Zealand.
Pakistan will also play four T20Is against England in England ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. The 20-over extravaganza will feature 20 teams and will begin on June 1st.
