Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are set to receive a significant boost as their young pace prodigy, Mayank Yadav, nears a return to action. The news comes on the eve of their crucial match against Rajasthan Royals, raising hopes for a strengthened bowling attack.
“He’s bowling today in the nets,” revealed LSG’s assistant coach, S Sriram, on the eve of the match. “So we’ll find out how he pulls up after today, he’s pretty close, so ya hopefully, fingers crossed.”
Mayank’s impact in the ongoing IPL season has been nothing short of phenomenal. Debuting for LSG this year, he grabbed headlines with back-to-back Player of the Match performances, claiming three wickets in each of those games. However, his dream run was cut short by abdominal soreness after bowling just one over against Gujarat Titans. He’s missed the subsequent four matches, leaving a void in LSG’s bowling lineup.
This isn’t the first time injury has sidelined the promising young talent. Drafted by LSG ahead of the 2022 season, he couldn’t participate due to a hamstring tear. Prior to that, he missed the 2021 auction entirely.
Despite the setbacks, Mayank’s initial performances this season showcased immense potential. He consistently clocked speeds above 150 kph, sparking discussions about his inclusion in the Indian national team.
Speaking about Mayank’s progress and skillset, Sriram highlighted his maturity and cricketing sense.
“I think he’s a pretty grounded person,” Sriram stated. “He seems very mature and he knows his body well, which is very good for a young rookie fast bowler… More than the pace that he’s provided I think his execution and the lengths that he’s hit have been standout for me.”
Mayank’s injury history has raised concerns about managing his workload effectively. Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop weighed in, suggesting a long-term development plan for Mayank:
“Whether it’s Lucknow Super Giants… or the BCCI, they can undertake a project … to say, ‘This guy is a diamond. Let us see if we can allocate some sort of funding and see where this goes.'”
Bishop proposed a dedicated support system, including a personal strength-and-conditioning trainer, medical personnel, and a dietician.
LSG currently hold the fourth position in the points table, having secured five wins in eight matches. Their recent run of victories, including consecutive wins against Chennai Super Kings, has bolstered their position. However, Mayank’s absence has been evident, and his potential return is highly anticipated.
With Mayank bowling in the nets and Sriram expressing optimism, LSG fans are optimistic about his return and its impact on the team’s performance. Mayank’s ability to consistently deliver high-speed deliveries has impressed cricket pundits, and his return would add valuable depth to LSG’s pace attack.
The upcoming match against Rajasthan Royals will be a test for LSG, but the team’s recent success and Mayank’s potential return create a positive outlook. With a potent bowling attack bolstered by Mayank’s return, LSG can look forward to maintaining their momentum in the tournament and pushing for a strong finish.
