- M.S.Dhoni has stepped down from the role of leading CSK
- Ravindra Jadeja will be captaining the team in this season
- it is unclear whether this is the last season for Dhoni
In a new set of developments just days before the fifteenth edition of the Indian Premier League is to begin, M.S.Dhoni the torchbearer of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has stepped down from the captaincy. Ravindra Jadeja, retained in November for INR 16 crore has been appointed as the new leader of the franchise. the all-rounder will be the third player ever in CSK history to lead the team.
It is unclear and quite shocking that Dhoni decided to step down so suddenly. It probably indicates that the World Cup-winning captain wants to distance himself from the franchise and from the tournament in the future. It is however unclear if the former skipper will play his last season this year or will he continue for a while, just not in the commanding role.
The official website of the franchise confirmed the news of Dhoni leaving the role and Jadeja taking his position. According to the official statement, the ex-captain will continue to be part of the team
“MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond,”
It is pertinent to mention that the new skipper has accumulated 2386 runs in Ipl so far with 127 wickets in 200 matches. The defending champions CSK will play their first match of IPL 2022 against KKR in Mumbai on 26th March.
