Ind vs Eng: Will Ben Stokes bowl in fourth test?

England’s tour of India has been a tale of two halves. After promising starts in the first two Tests, the visitors lost the third by a massive margin, facing an uphill battle to regain momentum. Amidst this struggle, a glimmer of hope emerges with the potential return of star all-rounder Ben Stokes to bowling duties.

Brendon McCullum, England’s head coach, recently discussed Stokes’ progress following his knee surgery. Having last competed in June, Stokes has gradually increased his bowling intensity, raising the possibility of him taking the field with both bat and ball in the remaining Tests.

“I’m not saying yes, I’m not saying no,” Stokes cautiously replied when asked about bowling in the next matches. He acknowledges the need for careful workload management and risk assessment, stating, “I managed to bowl at 100% in one of the warm-up days here… I felt like I could have bowled in the game but that would have been stupid.”

McCullum shares the cautious optimism, acknowledging the risk but appreciating Stokes’ confidence. “It’s good that he’s getting into a state where he thinks he might bowl,” he says, emphasizing the importance of avoiding excessive strain. “He won’t bowl unless he thinks he’s legitimately able to bowl.”

Stokes’ return holds significant implications for the team’s balance. England’s bowling attack has come under pressure in the initial Tests, relying heavily on James Anderson and Mark Wood, who are now showing signs of fatigue. Introducing an all-rounder like Stokes would provide flexibility and options in team selection, especially considering Ollie Robinson’s potential inclusion for the next Test.

Furthermore, Stokes is nearing the coveted milestone of 200 Test wickets. His bowling could bring tactical advantages, diversifying England’s bowling attack and adapting to pitch conditions. Ranchi, the venue for the next Test, is expected to favor spin, but a balanced attack with Stokes in the mix could prove crucial.

Despite the challenging series situation, McCullum reiterates the team’s confidence. “We’ve got a really good squad to pick from,” he says, highlighting the depth available. Past performances, adaptability to varying conditions, and unwavering support for any selected XI are key aspects of their approach.

While a final decision on the playing XI will likely be made a day before the match, the possibility of Stokes returning with the ball adds a crucial layer of intrigue to the series. Rotation to manage workload and maximize performance remains a possibility, with Robinson and Gus Atkinson as potential replacements.

As the team awaits training in Ranchi to assess the pitch and finalize their strategy, the hope for a turnaround in the series is evident. Stokes’ potential return, coupled with the team’s resilience and adaptability, could be the spark England needs to reclaim momentum and challenge India in the remaining Tests.
