In a groundbreaking development, the International League T20 (ILT20) has announced a new provision allowing franchises to have two wildcard players in their squads. This innovative move permits teams to add these wildcard players at any point during or before the season, providing flexibility and strategic options for the franchises. The wildcard option will be implemented starting from the second season of ILT20 and onwards.
How much an ILT20 franchise can spend on wildcard?
Franchises will be allowed to spend a maximum of US$ 250,000 on each wildcard player through direct signing. The ILT20 teams, aiming to build a well-rounded squad of 22 players, have an initial purse of US$ 2.5 million. While the squads for the upcoming 2024 season have already been finalized, teams retain the opportunity to enhance their line-ups by adding two wildcard players at any time during the season.
ILT20 2 is scheduled to commence on January 19 and conclude on February 18 in the UAE. In the event that franchises have already exhausted their purse, ILT20 officials have indicated that teams can utilize 10% of their initial purse to acquire wildcard players. This dynamic feature positions ILT20 as the third franchise league, joining the ranks of SA20 and The Hundred, to introduce wildcard players.
Teams were informed of this strategic addition during the current week, opening up new avenues for them to strengthen their squads and adapt to changing circumstances throughout the season. As of now, no wildcard player signings have taken place, but the prospect of unexpected additions adds an element of excitement and unpredictability to ILT20, further solidifying its status as a pioneering league in the world of cricket.
