In a significant development for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially lifted the ban imposed on the cricketing body with immediate effect. The ban, which was enforced on November 10, 2023, stemmed from a breach of obligations as an ICC Member by SLC.
The specific violation centered around the requirement for SLC to autonomously manage its affairs and prevent government interference in the governance, regulation, and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.
The ICC Board convened on November 21 to address the situation, concluding that Sri Lanka is now eligible to resume international competition in both bilateral cricket and ICC events. Notably, the ban’s consequences led to the relocation of the ongoing U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa.
The decision to lift the ban signifies the ICC’s satisfaction with SLC’s corrective measures, which have rectified the breach of membership obligations. The suspension period prompted close monitoring by the ICC Board, ensuring SLC’s compliance with necessary requirements.
In a press release, the ICC said,
The ICC Board has been monitoring the situation since the suspension and are now satisfied that SLC are no longer in breach of membership obligations.
This development allows Sri Lanka to fully participate in international cricket, bringing an end to the suspension period. Importantly, the relocation of the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup was a consequence of the ban and not indicative of ongoing concerns with SLC.
The ban lift is a positive outcome for Sri Lanka cricket, providing an opportunity for the nation to actively engage in international cricketing activities. SLC’s demonstrated ability to manage its affairs autonomously played a crucial role in the ICC’s decision, reflecting the governing body’s commitment to upholding membership obligations and ensuring the autonomy of affiliated cricket boards.
