Sri Lanka’s all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will not be able to make his debut for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) at least for another week. He is currently seeking a doctor’s advice for the chronic pain in his left heel.
The player played a recently-concluded series against Bangladesh, however, it is understood that he did it with ‘substantial’ pain as per ESPNcricinfo. According to Sri Lanka Cricket’s medical staff, the pain is ‘down to musculoskeletal apparatus in his left heel having become worn.’
The board’s medical panel has asked him to seek further advice from overseas doctors about the nature of the injury and ways to manage it. The reports indicate that the bowler will be able to leave Sri Lanka in a week or more.
The SRH bought him for a whopping amount of INR 1.5 Crore during the auction. While he was expected to be one of the costliest players, the franchise bought his services for his base price.
Neither the franchise nor the SLC have made any comment about the ‘official date’ for Hasaranga’s return. However, the board is keen on preparing their premier bowler for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, starting on June 1st.
If his medical condition requires further assessment and rest, it is unlikely that the player will render his services to SRH this season. Abhishek Sharma, Glenn Philips, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Jhathavedh Subramanyan, and Mayank Markande are the other options in the team’s spin bowling roaster.
