Hardik Pandya, the former skipper of the Gujarat Titans, is all set to lead Mumbai Indians in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). Pandya, who began his IPL career in 2015 with Mumbai, was roped in as Titans captain two years back.
The Gujarat-based franchise made its debut in the 2022 season and lifted the trophy in its very first appearance under Pandya’s leadership. After representing the dark blue jerseys for two years, Pandya is set to return to his old franchise as IPL 2024 begins on March 22nd.
Notably, the MI are led by Rohit Sharma since the 2013 season, it was reported that Pandya has returned to MI on one condition – leading the team in place of Sharma. The decision was not respected by many, however, Pandya has opened up on leading the five-time IPL winners, and Rohit playing under him.
He stated,
“We haven’t seen each other for the last couple of months. We are all professionals, and by the time, the team comes together and once he comes in, we will definitely have a chat.”
He further added that it would not make any difference given that Pandya has played under Rohit for years now. Not only in IPL, but the all-rounder has also featured in national team under the hitman. While the fans sense a rift between the two, Pandya has completely stopped all speculations. He says he is assured that Rohit will support his captaincy throughout the season.
“It won’t be any different, because he will be there to help out if I need his help,” Pandya asserted. “He is the captain of the Indian team, which helps me because what this team has achieved, it has achieved under him. From now onwards, it will be about carrying forward what he has achieved, so there will be nothing awkward. I have played for 10 years under him and I know he is going to have his hand on my shoulders throughout the season.”
Talking about the backlash he has been receiving since taking over Rohit as MI skipper, Pandya added,
“I don’t focus on things that I can’t control,” he said. “At the same point in time, we are grateful to the fans as a lot of fame and love comes from them. I respect their opinion, but at the same time, I am very excited.”
