Former Zimbabwe cricketer Guy Whittall found himself in a harrowing situation as he was attacked by a leopard while trekking in the Humani region. This incident comes eleven years after Whittall had a chilling encounter with a Nile crocodile under his bed.
During the leopard attack, Whittall’s loyal dog, Chikara, valiantly attempted to protect him and was also injured in the process. Whittall’s wife, Hannah Stooks-Whittall, confirmed the incident in a Facebook post, commending Chikara’s bravery. Despite losing a considerable amount of blood, Whittall was stabilized at the Hippo Clinic before being airlifted to Harare for further treatment.
The cricketing community and well-wishers flooded social media with messages of support and prayers for Whittall’s recovery. His wife expressed gratitude to the Hippo Clinic staff for their care and support during the critical moments following the attack. Chikara, the courageous canine companion, is currently undergoing veterinary treatment for injuries sustained in the encounter.
Whittall, renowned for his cricketing prowess, boasts an impressive career spanning 46 Tests, 147 ODIs, and numerous domestic matches. With the bat, he accumulated 2207 runs in Tests, including a best of 203*, alongside 2705 runs in ODIs. His batting average of 29.42 in Tests and 22.54 in ODIs reflects his consistency and contribution to the Zimbabwean cricket team’s success.
Additionally, Whittall showcased his bowling prowess, claiming 51 wickets in Tests and 88 wickets in ODIs. His bowling figures, including a best of 4/18 in Tests and 4/35 in ODIs, highlight his effectiveness with the ball. Furthermore, Whittall’s all-round capabilities were evident in domestic cricket, where he amassed 5639 runs and claimed 141 wickets in first-class matches.
