- ECB excludes Jofra Archer from IPL 2024 participation.
- Priority given to preparing for the T20 World Cup guides Jofra Archer’s cricketing path.
In a strategic move aimed at carefully managing Jofra Archer’s workload ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2024, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to keep the fast bowler out of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision reflects the ECB’s commitment to overseeing Archer’s recovery and ensuring his optimal fitness for upcoming international commitments.
Archer, who last played professional cricket in May 2023, sustained an elbow stress fracture during his stint with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Despite briefly joining the World Cup in India as a reserve, he continued to experience elbow pain during training in Mumbai, prompting his return to the UK after a brief stay in India.
The ECB’s decision to exclude Archer from the IPL auction on December 19 aligns with their larger strategy of closely monitoring his rehabilitation process. Archer’s absence from the list of players registered for the auction reinforces the ECB’s intent to maintain control over his comeback to competitive cricket.

Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, emphasized the importance of collaboration with franchise leagues but pointed out the unique circumstances surrounding Archer’s case. The ECB believes that managing Archer’s return is more feasible when he is under their supervision in the UK, as opposed to being part of an IPL team in India.
Archer’s recent two-year central contract with England, spanning from October 2023 to September 2025, further solidifies the ECB’s influence over his participation in external leagues. The ECB reportedly advised Archer against entering the IPL auction, ensuring that his comeback aligns with their planned schedule.
Archer’s troubled history with injuries, including a recurrence of a stress fracture earlier this year, has prompted the ECB to exercise caution. The ECB aims to reintegrate Archer into competitive cricket gradually, with a keen eye on his potential inclusion in England’s squad for the T20 World Cup in June 2024.
Despite missing the IPL, Archer’s focus will be on proving his fitness through appearances in the County Championship and potentially the 2nd XI county T20 competition. England’s home T20I series against Pakistan from May 22 to 30 provides an opportunity for Archer’s return to international cricket, showcasing his value ahead of major events like the T20 World Cup.
While Archer’s absence from the IPL may disappoint fans, the ECB’s decision underscores their commitment to prioritizing the player’s long-term fitness and success on the international stage.
As the countdown to the T20 World Cup begins, England remains hopeful that Archer’s presence will add significant value to their campaign in 2024.
