Owner of famous electronics brand Haier and Ruba and chairman of famous Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, Peshawar Zalmi has his eyes set on one of the biggest and very famous football premier league clubs, Chelsea.
The UAE-based news source Khaleej Times reported that the business tycoon showed interest in buying the club after its owner Roman Abramovich put it up for sale after the cry of calls to put sanctions on the owner got louder in the UK.
Roman Abramovich is of Russian descent and with the recent attacks of the country in Ukraine, the world is putting restrictions on all things, Russian.
Abramovich’s statement on selling the club
After remaining in the ownership of the football franchise for 19 years and taking it to unprecedented glory the owner feels that this is the right time to call it quits.
“In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the club, the fans, the employees, as well as the club’s sponsors and partners,”
He said he will forego all loans that the club lent and the money received from the sale will be donated to the victims of war in Ukraine.
Javed Afridi is not the only competitor
Looks like the cricket franchise owner is not the only one wanting to step into the ownership of a football club. A swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss is also a contender to buy Chelsea. Sources privy to the matter have told that Wyss had been approached by the club owner with regards to its purchase.
On the other hand, Khaleej Times has also reported a meeting conducted by Javed Afridi’s team with a sports agency in the UK. According to the statement, “Afridi’s team held a meeting on Wednesday with a sports and legal agency in the UK. There are a bunch of investors who are interested in Chelsea Football Club.”
However, this is still a developing story and no clear or official statement confirming the buy have come yet. It is pertinent to mention that under Roman’s possession, Chelsea has won five FA Cup trophies and five Premier League titles.
