The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up for its 17th edition, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) releasing the initial schedule for the first 17 days. The remaining fixtures will be revealed later, awaiting confirmation of polling dates for India’s general elections.
The excitement is palpable, but defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face a potential setback with the injury of their key pacer, Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan speedster sustained a hamstring injury during the ongoing T20I series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and was forced off the field during the second T20I due to discomfort.
Pathirana’s participation in the IPL 2024 opener, a marquee clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, is now under a cloud. He has also been ruled out of the third T20I, adding further uncertainty to his availability for the initial stages of the IPL.
This comes on top of CSK already missing their star opener Devon Conway, who is sidelined with a thumb injury. Pathirana’s absence, if it extends beyond the opening match, would be a significant blow to CSK’s bowling attack. His fiery pace and wicket-taking abilities were crucial to their title run in IPL 2023.
The BCCI’s decision to release a partial schedule allows for flexibility to accommodate any potential disruption caused by the elections. Fans eagerly await the complete schedule and hope for Pathirana’s swift recovery. With the tournament kicking off on March 22nd, CSK will need to make crucial decisions regarding their bowling attack if their pace spearhead remains unavailable.
