- Bangladesh won their 100th Test match against Sri Lanka in Colombo
- It was the first time the men in green had beaten the hosts in Test matches
March 19 2017 marks a very memorable day for the Bangladesh cricket team. This day, five years ago, was when the team won their first Test match against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka and it was their 100th Test match.
Bangladesh toured Sri Lanka to play two Tests, three ODIs and two T20Is series in March/April 2017. While in the first Test the visitor’s performance was quite below par, they came back with vengeance in the second one. Sri Lanka took to the pitch first and put 338 on the board for Bangladesh to chase in their first inning, thanks to a brilliant 138 from Chandimal.
In reply, the Bengal Tigers put on a great batting effort and most of their line-up chipped in important runs to lodge a massive 467 for the hosts, courtesy of a stunning 116 from Shakib al Hasan and half-centuries from Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim and an excellent 75 from the debutant Mosaddek Hossain. Herath and Sandakan took four wickets each.
Finally, the players on tour were left to chase 191 on the final day. By lunchtime, the team in green were 38 for 2 but Tamim Iqbal’s 81 and Sabbir Rehman’s 41 did the trick for them and in the most important Test match, team Bangladesh defeated the home side for the very first time shortly after tea. This will go down in history as one of the most exhilarating wins for Bangladesh.
