- Imad Wasim criticizes Babar Azam, stating he hasn’t won a major match for Pakistan since 2019.
- Azam’s performance in the failed chase against Australia draws scrutiny, raising questions about his ability in crucial matches.
- Wasim highlights Azam’s responsibility as the top ODI batter, urging him to dominate and lead Pakistan to victories in the ICC World Cup 2023.
Pakistan’s defeat to Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023 has sparked criticism, particularly directed at captain Babar Azam.
All-rounder Imad Wasim, expressing concern over Azam’s recent performances, stated on a local TV channel,
“At the world stage, there is pressure, but it is also the place where you prove your worth. I think the last time Babar performed in a big match was against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup when he scored a century. But after that, he is yet to win a big match for Pakistan. This is not criticism but a fact.”
During the failed chase of a 368-run target set by Australia, Azam’s individual performance fell under scrutiny as he managed only 18 runs in 14 balls.

Wasim emphasized Azam’s role as the number one batter in ODIs, saying,
“Being the number one batter in ODIs, it is Babar’s responsibility to win matches, but questions will be raised if he doesn’t do that. He needs to bat in accordance with the team’s requirement. He has the ability to dominate bowlers, and this World Cup is the place to do that.”
The criticism comes amid disappointment over Babar’s performance in key matches. Wasim pointed out, “At the world stage, there is pressure, but it is also the place where you prove your worth. I think the last time Babar performed in a big match was against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup, when he scored a century. But after that, he has yet to win a big match for Pakistan. This is not criticism but a fact.”
The defeat against Australia highlights the challenges facing Babar Azam as captain and premier batter. Wasim’s observations underscore the expectations placed on Azam and the need for him to lead the team to victories in high-stakes encounters.
