In a thrilling showdown at Benoni on Sunday, the stage was set for a fierce battle between India and Australia in the final match of the U19 ODI World Cup 2024.
Australia, batting first, posted a formidable total of 253/7, anchored by impressive contributions from Harjas Singh, who scored 55 runs, Hugh Weibgen with 48, and Ollie Peake adding 46 runs to the tally.
Despite the Indian bowlers Raj Limbani taking 3 wickets for 38 runs and Naman Tiwari claiming 2 wickets for 63 runs, Australia managed to set a challenging target.
In response, the Indian batting lineup struggled to find momentum, with only Adarsh Singh managing to notch up 47 runs and Murugan Abhishek contributing 42 runs.
However, the rest of the batters failed to make significant contributions, leading to a collapse with India being all out for 174 runs in 43.5 overs.
The Australian bowlers, led by Mahli Beardman who claimed 3 wickets for just 15 runs, and Rafael MacMillan with 3 wickets for 43 runs, proved too much for the Indian lineup to handle.
U19 ODI World Cup win further adds to trophy tally
With this victory, Australia clinched the U19 ODI World Cup title, defeating India by a commanding margin of 79 runs. Mahli Beardman’s exceptional performance earned him the prestigious Player-of-the-Final award, further highlighting Australia’s dominance in youth cricket.
This triumph adds to Australia’s recent successes in cricket, including their victory over India in the Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, which was held in India under the captaincy of Pat Cummins. Additionally, Australia also emerged victorious in the World Test Championship 2023 against India.
Reflecting on the past 12 months, Australia’s cricketing achievements extend to their women’s team, who clinched the T20 World Cup 2023 title, solidifying their status as a cricketing powerhouse across all formats.
