Another World Cup for England Women

  • On this day in 2009, England women bagged their third World Cup title
  • New Zealand could only muster 166 runs, batting first
  • The women in blue easily chased the target in 47th over clinching another title for their team

22nd March 2009 marks the day England’s women’s team clinched their third World Cup title beating New Zealand in Australia. The English women had a flawless World Cup and had made it to the finals by winning five of their six matches. It is worth noticing that in this time in 2009 the men’s side had only one trophy.

The white ferns had won the toss and elected to bat first that day but things didn’t go too well with the bat for them. A collapsed top and middle order put the women in black in a lot of trouble. Captain Haidee Tiffen’s 30 and Lucy Doolan’s 48 helped the team put 166 on the board. Nicky Shaw of the opposition claimed four scalps for her team that massively aided in providing friction to the incoming runs.

The opening partnership of almost 80 runs did the trick for the women in blue. Sarah Taylor’s 30 and Caroline Atkins 40 provided a great start for the team. Even though, the middle order didn’t work for them either but everybody chipped in small numbers and in the first ball of the 47th over, it was all over for the New Zealand women as the girls in blue had claimed their third World Cup trophy winning by four wickets.

Nicky Shaw was deemed player of the match while Claire Taylor bagged player of the series award. It was a glorious day for the English women.
