While the stakeholders in Indian and Pakistani cricket boards are still pondering over the introduction of a women’s league, the West Indian board has taken the lead to introduce a woman version of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The first tournament will be played alongside men in the Caribbean this year.
The inaugural edition will be played from August 30 to September 30 and three teams namely Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Royals and Trinbago Knight Riders. The group stage matches will be played in three separate venues across four countries while one venue will host the final. All male and female players currently enrolled in the West Indies international arena will participate in the respective tournaments.
According to the president of the West Indies cricket board, Ricky Skerritt, this tournament will provide a huge chance for women players to excel in the sport and promised that the quality of the league will be top-notch. He also expressed his satisfaction and joy in partnering with the CPL, a dream they envisioned in 2019for the first time before the pandemic took over.
“Increasing the opportunities for West Indian women and girls to get involved in cricket is one of CWI’s strategic priorities, and we are delighted that we have been able to partner with CPL to further the expansion plans that we had first unveiled in 2019 prior to the arrival of the Covid Pandemic. We are confident that all CPL women’s games will be highly competitive and will add quality entertainment to our fans in the region and around the world,”
The West Indies women are currently participating in the ICC Women World Cup 2022 and have done quite well up till now. The women in maroon have won two out of four matches. This league will be a big stepping stone in improving cricket in the country.
