One of the members of the selection committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Wahab Riaz has addressed recent media reports suggesting a rift between senior players, particularly Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim, and captain Babar Azam.
These rumors gained traction after both Amir and Wasim announced their retirements from international cricket during Shaheen Afridi’s short-lived captaincy in the T20 format. Their retirements were seen as a potential protest against Babar Azam’s leadership, especially considering their public criticisms of his T20I tactics.
However, Wahab Riaz paints a different picture. “There are many speculations, and things get worse because of us [media],” he stated. He emphasizes that upon visiting the training camp in Kakul, the atmosphere amongst the players seemed positive.
“They were united at Iftar meals, playing indoor games, watching matches together, and even discussing cricket strategies,” Riaz revealed. This description contradicts allegations of a fractured team environment.
Wahab’s comments highlight the importance of responsible media coverage. He urges caution in reporting rumors and emphasizes the need to consider a broader perspective before drawing conclusions about team dynamics.
With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, a united Pakistan side is crucial for success. Riaz’s statement offers a reassuring glimpse of team unity, potentially dispelling rumors and fostering team spirit in the lead-up to the highly anticipated tournament.
