Namibia Cricket has announced the first-ever central contracts for the women’s team. This landmark development came on March 26th as ten professional contracts were awarded to Capricorn Eagles.
These contracts were announced in a ceremony at Namibia Cricket Ground, while they were negotiated and signed in February 2024.
This also marks Naimbia Cricket the first sporting body in the country to announce central contracts for both men’s and women’s national teams.
It should be noted that Kayleen Green, Sune Wittmann, Arrasta Diergaardt, Edelle van Zyl, Bianca Manuel, Irene van Zyl, Wilka Mwatile, Mekelaye Mwatile, Naomi Benjamin and Saima Tuhadeleni are named in the central contracts list.
In T20I, the Namibia women’s national team is placed 17th on ICC rankings. Opening up on this great success, CEO of Cricket Namibia Johan Muller said:
“For the first time, we have been able to professionalise the women’s game. This is a significant moment for sports in the country. It’s the first time ladies have been signed on contracts where cricket is their occupation.
“Ten ladies now have the opportunity to support their households by pursuing their passion. We want to thank Capricorn Group and everyone involved.”
It is pertinent to mention that the Namibia women’s cricket team received the status from ICC in 2018. Since then, they have played 72 T20I matches, emerging victorious on 44 occasions.
