Shahid Afridi reacts on Shaheen Afridi’s likely removal as T20I captain

Shaheen Shah Afridi is likely to be sacked as T20I captain putting an end to his short captaincy stint. As the T20 World Cup 2024 is over the horizon, the new PCB management is not satisfied with Shaheen’s captaincy.

Notably, his first task after succeeding Babar was the five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Pakistan faced a 4-1 defeat. While some perceived it as just a beginning, others were extremely critical of the poor start. Shaheen’s father-in-law, Shahid Afridi has also talked about his reported sack as a T20I captain.

The former cricketer believes an individual should have been given enough time to prove himself. He feels either the decision by previous management to change the captain was wrong or the decision by new management to sack him is wrong.

“I think that if you have appointed someone as captain (Shaheen) and given him the responsibility then give him time as well,” Afridi said.

“If you change the captain then either the decision to appoint him was wrong or the decision to change him now is wrong,” he further added.

Notably, Lahore Qalandars’ campaign in PSL 2024 added further fumes to the fire. Afridi and co could win only one out of ten league stage games. While a couple of T20 endeavours including the World Cup are around the corner, the board feels a need to prepare a potential captain just in time.

Afridi says whoever is in charge of the board, makes their own decision as soon as they are at the helm. It disturbs the whole decorum, with new management’s will to manage things their way.

“The biggest problem with our cricket is that our system changes whenever the faces change in the board. Whoever comes thinks whatever he is doing is the best for Pakistan cricket,”
