Former captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Virat Kohli achieved a unique milestone during the team’s match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Monday. Scoring a 49-ball 77, he added his 100th fifty-plus score to his stats tally in the shortest format.
It makes Kohli the only third player to have 100 or more fifty-plus scores in the T20 cricket. West Indies’ sensation Chris Gayle tops the chart with 110 fifty-plus scores followed by Australia’s David Warner with 109 in the format.
Not only this but this inning against the PBKS also helped Kohli register his 51st IPL century. Loyal to RCB since 2008, the right-handed batter has 7361 IPL runs under his belt from 231 appearances. The leading IPL run-scorer averages 37.36 at a strike rate of 130.16.
Notably, out of his 100 fifty-plus T20 scores are eight centuries and 92 half-centuries out of which, one century and 37 fifties belong to his international career. With the courtesy of his record-breaking 77, the RCB were able to chase a target of 177 runs sparing four balls, and won by four wickets.
The RCB will now squad off against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29th at M Chinnawswamy stadium in their third game of the season. It remains to be seen if Kohli will replicate this masterclass performance in the remainder of the tournament.
