The Mumbai Indians have become the first team to secure their spot in the playoffs of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2024) second edition. Their dominant seven-wicket victory over the Gujarat Giants on Friday solidified their position at the top of the table.
Batting first on what seemed like a batting paradise, the Gujarat Giants posted a competitive total of 190 runs. Dayalan Hemalatha’s 74 runs and a crucial 66 from wicket-keeper Beth Mooney formed the backbone of their innings. Despite picking up seven wickets, the Mumbai Indians bowling attack, led by Saika Ishaque’s two scalps for 31 runs, couldn’t contain the flow of runs.
Chasing a seemingly daunting target, Mumbai Indians rode on a scintillating knock from their captain, Harmanpreet Kaur. Her unbeaten 95 runs off just 48 balls completely dismantled the Gujarat bowling attack. Yastika Bhatia provided valuable support with a solid 49 runs off 36 deliveries. The Indian batting duo ensured Mumbai chased down the target with a single ball to spare, showcasing their immense firepower.
With five wins from seven matches and a healthy net run rate of 0.343, Mumbai Indians are currently perched atop the WPL 2024 points table. Their clinical performance against Gujarat further establishes them as one of the strongest contenders for the championship title. While Gujarat’s playoff hopes aren’t extinguished yet, this convincing victory by Mumbai sends a strong message to the rest of the tournament participants.
