Haris Rauf: PCB to Reinstate Central Contract?

In a surprising turn of events, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering the reinstatement of Haris Rauf’s central contract, just a month after it was terminated on December 1, 2023. Sources suggest that the dynamic pacer has lodged an appeal, and chances are bright that the cricketing authorities will restore his contract.

The termination of Rauf’s central contract came in the wake of a probe initiated by the PCB, triggered by the speedster’s refusal to join Pakistan’s Test squad for the Australia tour in the 2023-24 season. The PCB accused Rauf of a “material violation of the central contract,” emphasizing that playing for Pakistan is the ultimate honor and privilege for any sportsperson.

The 30-year-old had cited injury concerns and workload management as reasons for his reluctance to play in the Australia Tests, a decision that did not sit well with the cricketing board. The PCB management provided Rauf with a chance for a personal hearing on January 30, 2024, under the principles of natural justice. However, his response was deemed unsatisfactory, leading to the continuation of his contract termination.

Rauf, who made his Test debut against England in 2022 in Rawalpindi, has only played a solitary Test match for Pakistan. Despite his limited Test exposure, he has showcased his prowess in limited-overs cricket, amassing 69 wickets in 37 ODIs and an impressive 90 wickets in 66 T20Is.

However, the speedster is currently facing a setback in his career as he is sidelined due to a shoulder dislocation sustained during a match in the ongoing Pakistan Super League season nine. This injury adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing saga surrounding his central contract.

While the decision to terminate Rauf’s contract was based on principles, the latest twist in the tale suggests a potential reevaluation by the PCB. The cricketing fraternity awaits an official announcement regarding the reinstatement, and if the sources are to be believed, Rauf might soon find himself back in the fold, with the PCB possibly lifting the restrictions on his participation in foreign leagues up to June 30, 2024.
