New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is taking cautious steps towards resuming cricketing ties with Pakistan as their security team conducts reconnaissance ahead of the upcoming T20 series scheduled for April. The arrival of the NZC security group signifies a significant move towards restoring confidence in Pakistan as a cricketing host, following the abrupt return of the New Zealand team in September 2021 due to security concerns.
These security concerns arose when NZC received a fake email threatening the players and the boards. Upon research, it was found out that email ID was operated from India, as a plan to halt cricket in Pakistan. England Cricket Board (ECB) too cancelled their respective tour, however, compensated with additional matches in the impending series as goodwill.
The NZC delegation, comprising two members and an impartial security specialist, along with the CEO of the New Zealand Players Association, is on a mission to assess safety measures in Pakistan. Their itinerary includes visits to match venues and team accommodations in Lahore and Rawalpindi, where the T20 series is set to take place.
Notably, Pakistan successfully hosted the Asia Cup 2023. Not only this, but since the revival of cricket in Pakistan, the nation has hosted multiple men’s and women’s teams. Also, the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League is successfully going on.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s recent defeat to Australia in the first Test has resulted in a slip to the second spot in the ICC World Test Championship table. Australia’s dominance was evident in their 172-run victory over New Zealand at Basin Reserve, Wellington. Despite New Zealand’s struggles, Glenn Phillips emerged as a standout performer with both bat and ball, particularly with his five-wicket haul in Australia’s second innings.
However, New Zealand’s batting woes against Australia’s bowling attack underscored the need for the team to regroup ahead of future Tests. The disappointing defeat highlighted the challenges New Zealand faces in Test cricket, resulting in a drop in their WTC ranking.
As NZC’s security visit progresses, all eyes are now turning towards the upcoming T20 series, where New Zealand seeks redemption after their Test defeat. Pakistan’s commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for international cricket has been underscored through NZC’s visit, signaling hope for the resumption of cricketing activities between the two nations.
