LQ vs PZ washes away: Can Lahore Qalandars qualify for PSL 9 playoff?

Persistent rain in Rawalpindi has thrown the PSL 9 playoff race into disarray, particularly for the struggling Lahore Qalandars. Saturday’s doubleheader face the brunt of the downpour, with Match 17 between Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi getting completely washed out.

This washout significantly impacts the Qalandars’ playoff aspirations. Having lost all six of their matches so far, their only hope was to win their remaining four matches and secure a maximum of 8 points. Qualification for the playoffs would then have hinged on a favorable scenario involving Net Run Rates (NRRs) of competing teams.

While the minimum qualification threshold for previous PSL seasons hovered around 10 points, there have been exceptions. In 2022, Islamabad United reached the playoffs with 8 points, and Peshawar Zalmi did the same in 2020 with 9 points.

However, the washed-out match against Zalmi grants the Qalandars a single point, leaving them with a maximum possible total of 7 points even if they win their remaining games. This makes their playoff qualification highly improbable.

Meanwhile, the rain-affected scenario creates a mixed bag for other teams. Quetta Gladiators, currently sitting comfortably in second place with 8 points and five matches remaining, have less to worry about. A washout will translate to an automatic point for them, allowing them to focus on maintaining their top-four position in the remaining matches.

For Islamabad United and Karachi Kings, both teams are tied at 4 points with five matches remaining. With the other teams also vying for a place in the top four, the upcoming matches will be crucial in determining the final standings.

Peshawar Zalmi can also breathe a sigh of relief. Though the washout might impact their final position, at least they walk away with a point to gather the seventh of the season. They can now focus on their remaining matches and comfortably earn a playoff spot.

The rain in Rawalpindi has undoubtedly shaken up the PSL 9 playoff race. While Lahore Qalandars’ hopes seem dashed, the path for other teams remains uncertain. The upcoming matches will be fiercely contested as teams battle for a coveted spot in the playoffs.
