Pakistan’s T20I captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi, recently engaged with fans in an X Space session, discussing various topics and answering questions. Currently playing for the IlT20 side Desert Vipers alongside former teammate Mohammad Amir, who retired from international cricket in 2020, Afridi addressed the intriguing possibility of Amir making a comeback for the T20 World Cup 2024.
During the session, Afridi expressed interest in discussing the idea with Amir, highlighting the enjoyment of bowling alongside him after almost five years and praising their partnership. Amir’s retirement in 2020, citing favoritism and injustice by head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis, stirred discussions among fans ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023, urging Amir to reconsider.
Afridi said,
“I will talk to Mohammad Amir if he’s available to come back for Pakistan once again. Amir and I bowled together after almost 5 years. It was a very good experience to bowl with him, our partnership was great,”
Despite Amir’s consistent refusals to return, the close relationship between him and Afridi leaves the possibility open, especially with the upcoming T20 World Cup. Amir had represented Pakistan in 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 50 T20Is before his retirement in 2020, playing a crucial role in Pakistan’s victories in the ICC T20 World Cup 2009 and ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
Afridi’s willingness to discuss Amir’s potential comeback for the T20 World Cup 2024 indicates the value of experience and skill Amir could bring to the team. The dynamics within the Pakistan cricket setup and discussions between players and team management will play a crucial role in any decision.
The T20 World Cup 2024 presents a potential opportunity for Amir to don the Pakistan jersey again, and fans eagerly await further developments and announcements regarding his potential return and role in the campaign.
