In a surprising turn of events, Mashrafe Mortaza, the veteran cricketer and former captain of the Bangladesh national team, has made himself unavailable for the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024.
The reason behind his unavailability is his focus on his burgeoning political career. Mortaza, who is also a Member of Parliament, was elected for the second time in the country’s general elections held in early January 2024. His political commitments have compelled him to step away from the cricketing arena temporarily.
Representing the Sylhet Strikers in the ongoing BPL, Mashrafe Mortaza was not only a key player for the team but also served as its leader. However, his political responsibilities as the Awami League’s whip in parliament have taken precedence, prompting his withdrawal from the remainder of the tournament.
The Sylhet Strikers released a statement on Wednesday, acknowledging Mortaza’s commitment to the team in the tournament thus far. The statement mentioned that Mortaza would be available to play for the Strikers if there is an opportunity in between his political commitments and schedule. The franchise expressed gratitude for his contributions and looks forward to having him back when possible.
“Mashrafe will be available to play for the Strikers further in the season if there is an opportunity in between his political commitments and schedule,” a statement from Strikers said on Wednesday. “Sylhet Strikers franchise has extended gratitude to Mashrafe for his commitment to the team in the tournament so far and looks forward to have him back when he is able.”
Despite struggling with injuries, Mortaza played in all of the first five games for the Strikers, unfortunately, all of which the team lost. Reports suggest that he faced challenges in preparing for the games due to his physical condition. With Mortaza stepping down as the captain, Mohammad Mithun will now lead the Sylhet Strikers in their upcoming matches.
The Sylhet Strikers’ next game is scheduled against Durdanto Dhaka on February 2nd, Friday. The team will strive to regroup and perform under the leadership of Mohammad Mithun, hoping to turn the tide in the remainder of the BPL season. The absence of Mortaza will undoubtedly be felt, but the team remains optimistic about its prospects with a new leader at the helm.
