In a surprising turn of events, Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell found himself in the midst of controversy surrounding his recent drinking habits. Reports indicate that Maxwell attended a drinking session during a concert, where he eventually fell unconscious, leading to his hospitalization.
The incident occurred while Maxwell was enjoying a musical performance by Six and Out, a band featuring former Australian pacer Brett Lee. Although Maxwell swiftly returned to training for the upcoming series, Cricket Australia (CA) wasted no time launching an investigation into the matter.
The Daily Telegraph first reported the incident, highlighting the seriousness with which CA is approaching the situation. Despite resuming training, Maxwell will not be featuring in the upcoming West Indies series as CA has opted to rest him.
What does Pat Cummins have to say about Maxwell’s drinking session?
The decision reflects the organization’s commitment to player well-being and upholding a high standard of conduct. When questioned about the incident, Australian captain Pat Cummins responded diplomatically, emphasizing Maxwell’s responsibility for his decisions.
“Potentially, I think only ‘Maxy’ can answer that one. I was there at The Gov for the concert but I left pretty early — I knew he was in town but I didn’t cross paths with Maxy at all.
Cummins further stated,
“We’re all adults, and part of being an adult is you make your own decisions. In terms of this incident, he wasn’t on tour with Australia; he was over there for a private event, so it is a little bit different, but absolutely, any decision you make you’ve got to own it and be comfortable with it.”
Cummins acknowledged the players’ exceptional performance on the field but stressed the importance of discipline and responsible decision-making off the field. The incident involving Maxwell has sparked discussions about the balance between personal life and professional responsibilities for athletes, prompting Cricket Australia to address the matter with due diligence.
“I think in terms of performance on the field you can’t really ask for much more from how the players have performed, but also I think the way we’ve gone about it, the team has shown incredible discipline and I think they’ve made a lot of people proud with the way we’ve gone about it over the last couple of years.”
