- Mohsin Naqvi appointed new Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) by Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab.
- Official nomination approved by PCB Patron-in-Chief and Pakistan Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar.
- Leadership change aimed at addressing challenges and implementing positive reforms in Pakistan cricket.
In a significant development for Pakistan cricket, the Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), succeeding Zaka Ashraf. The official nomination received approval from PCB Patron-in-Chief and Pakistan Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, marking a strategic shift in leadership within the cricket board.
Naqvi, replacing Ashraf in the Board of Governors, confirmed his appointment and expressed a dedicated commitment to addressing the challenges and issues affecting Pakistan cricket. Speaking to reporters, Naqvi emphasized the urgent need for reforms in the cricket structure, signaling his intention to steer positive transformations.
“I will try to fix the issues affecting Pakistan cricket. Reforms in cricket are the need of the hour,” Naqvi said.
Why Zaka Ashraf resigned as PCB Chairman?
The change in leadership comes after Zaka resigned as the chairman of the PCB Management Committee during a committee meeting. Ashraf, who assumed the role on July 6, cited difficulties in working under existing conditions as a primary reason for his resignation. Despite his efforts for the betterment of cricket during his tenure, the 72-year-old found it challenging to continue working in those circumstances.
“I was working for the betterment of cricket but it is not possible for us to work in this way,” he said as per the people present at an ongoing committee meeting.
“Now it is up to Prime Minister [Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar], whomever he nominates [will take my place],” he added.
Ashraf’s tenure oversaw Pakistan’s participation in major tournaments, including the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, where the team faced challenges, failing to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup and the semi-finals of the World Cup.
The appointment of Mohsin Naqvi as the new PCB Chairman follows official approval by PCB’s patron-in-chief, Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar. These changes in leadership aim to address existing challenges and bring about positive transformations in Pakistan cricket, aligning with Naqvi’s commitment to cricket reforms.
