In a strategic move aimed at carefully managing Jofra Archer’s workload ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2024, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to keep the fast bowler out of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). Archer, who last played professional cricket in May 2023, sustained an elbow stress fracture during his stint with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Despite briefly joining the World Cup in India as a reserve, he continued to experience elbow pain during training in Mumbai, prompting his return to the UK after a brief stay in India.
The ECB’s decision to exclude Archer from the IPL auction on December 19 aligns with their larger strategy of closely monitoring his rehabilitation process. Archer’s absence from the list of players registered for the auction reinforces the ECB’s intent to maintain control over his comeback to competitive cricket.
