The cricketing world is in mourning following the untimely demise of 20-year-old Worcestershire left-arm spinner Josh Baker, who passed away at a tender age Baker, a promising talent, had already etched his name in the annals of English cricket with his stellar performances on the field and his vibrant spirit off it.
Having signed his maiden contract with Worcestershire at the age of 17, Baker swiftly made his mark, amassing 43 wickets in 22 first-class matches and 27 scalps in white-ball cricket. Notably, he showcased his prowess as an emerging all-rounder, notching up two half-centuries, including a career-best 75 against Gloucestershire in July 2023.
Born in Redditch and nurtured at Malvern College, Baker’s cricketing journey burgeoned through the age-group ranks at New Road, culminating in a stint with the England under-19 squad. His meteoric rise saw him ink a new three-year deal with Worcestershire last season before honing his skills Down Under during a winter stint in Sydney’s grade cricket circuit.
Tragically, Baker’s promising career was cut short just after he exhibited his talent on the field, claiming 3 for 66 in a 2nd XI Championship encounter against Somerset. Ashley Giles, Worcestershire’s chief executive, led the tributes, describing Baker as an integral part of their cricketing family. “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated,” Giles lamented. “Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family. We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh’s family and friends.”
Despite his short tenure, Baker left an indelible mark, notably facing the formidable Ben Stokes, who famously scored 161 runs against him in an over. Stokes, acknowledging Baker’s potential, reached out with words of encouragement, underscoring the camaraderie within the cricketing fraternity.
Plans to honor Baker’s memory are underway, with tributes pouring in from all quarters of the cricketing community. The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) expressed profound sorrow over Baker’s passing, extending condolences to his loved ones and teammates. Rob Lynch, PCA’s chief executive, pledged support, stating, “Everybody at the PCA is heartbroken to hear of Josh’s passing… The PCA and the Professional Cricketers’ Trust are working to support Josh’s family, his teammates, and all PCA members who are affected.”
As English cricket grapples with the loss of one of its brightest prospects, the legacy of Josh Baker will endure, a testament to his talent, passion, and unwavering spirit on and off the field. Rest in peace, Josh.
