What does Shaheen Shah Afridi have to say about his removal as T20I captain?

In a surprising turn of events, fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has finally addressed his removal as the T20I captain of the Pakistan cricket team. The decision, which came just two months ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts.

Shaheen, who led Pakistan in a single T20I series against New Zealand resulting in a 4-1 defeat, had earlier expressed frustration over what he deemed an injustice. However, his recent official statement paints a different picture. In a message released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Shaheen stated,

“It was an absolute honor to captain the Pakistan National Cricket Team. I will always cherish the memories and the opportunity. As a team player, it is my duty to back our captain, Babar Azam. I have played under his captaincy and have nothing but respect for him. I will try to help him on and off the field. We are all one. Our aim is the same: to help Pakistan become the best team in the world.”

The PCB’s decision to reinstate Babar Azam as captain has been met with mixed reactions. Babar, who was removed from all formats after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, now takes the helm for white-ball cricket. His first challenge will be leading the team in the 5-match T20I series against New Zealand at home. Following that, Pakistan face tours to Ireland and England, culminating in the much-anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies.

Shaheen’s reaction to the captaincy change remains dignified. Sources close to the player reveal that he was caught off guard by the decision and had only received hints through social media. The official announcement came shortly before Babar was named captain by the PCB.

As the cricketing world watches Babar’s leadership unfold, the focus now shifts to Pakistan’s upcoming challenges. With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, all eyes are on Babar and his team as they strive to make their mark on the global stage.
