Azhar Ali’s recent form-a torment for the selection committee

Former captain of the Pakistan cricket team in Tests, Azhar Ali, has only scored 124 runs in his last six innings with an average of just 20.67 including only one 50 plus score and the rest being 6, 3, 17, 6 and 14.
Azhar Ali's recent form-a torment for the selection committee

After the retirement of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, Azhar Ali was to perform as a senior top-order opening batsman representing Pakistan. Still, this right-handed batsman couldn’t perform up to the mark and therefore could not meet the expectations which were demanded of him.

It has been reported that under Misbah’s captaincy, Azhar Ali averaged much better than now, which was 50.67 in 52 Test matches. Still, since Misbah retired, Azhar’s average kept racing down, showing an average rate of 34.94 in 35 test matches.

Azhar has also failed to win the hearts of his fan base, who are now in favour of switching him with a youngster who could perform well for the team. Not only was his performance weak in the previous innings, but looking at the current Test series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, he did not add many contributions with the runs.

He has captained the Pakistan cricket team in tests starting from October 2019, replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed due to his poor performance. Also he has led the team in One Day International cricket too. Still, the selection committee has many concerns for this experienced test player, as his present form might raise several doubts about his selection in the upcoming events.
